Guerilla Girls: Leap 1

The Guerilla Girls are an anonomyous group of female artists who are dedicated to fighting racism and sexism within the world of modern art. The group formed in 1985 with a mission to bring gender and racial inequality into focus in the arts.

The piece I chose is from 2012. I understand it may be a little risky to use a photo such as this for class, but they are a group that I have followed for a long time and I feel that they produce positive propaganda that reaches an audience such as myself. The content is produced in the context of race and gender inequality. This context has been relevant from the start of Guerilla Girls until now. It's striking to compare the number of nude male to females in the artworld display. It's even more striking to understand the number of women work being displayed in the modern art world to men.

The purpose of this propaganda piece is to bring awareness to the truth of women on how their being represented in the modern artworld. The stat in the caption on the piece states that "less than 3% of the artist in the modern art section are women, but 83% of the nudes are female. Does this tell women that our bodies are good enough to be represented through the work of men, but our own work and ideas are not good enough for the modern art world?

The target audience are those apart of the art world, who either contribute or support the culture. I also think the audience is anyone who is for women equality. What really grabs your attention about any of the Guerilla Girls work is the mystery behind who they are. They also use somewhat provocative imagery and captions that some would find voguer, but I find empowering and truthful.

A liberating lifestyle is given off of their word. The value of racial and gender equality is always at the forefront of their art.
